The title character is a rich and jaded young man who somehow awakens the passion of the sensitive young girl Tatyana. The opera is based on Alexander Pushkin's verse novel "Eugene Onegin," one of the masterworks of Russian literature. Its distinctive feature is Michael Levine's spare, "white box" production design, which contrasts with Levine's traditionally elaborate period costumes.
